The department is in the process of installing the first micro-CT scanner on campus, which will allow researchers across campus to analyze samples three-dimensionally without destroying them, as well as a highly customized scanning electron microscope. The College of Arts and Science honored three distinguished alumni and two friends of the college for their distinguished service to the college during the Arts and Science banquet at the Reynolds Alumni Center Feb. Institute for Korean Studies to Focus on Research The University of Missouri has faculty members spread across the Columbia campus who study various aspects of the Korean peninsula. Until now, MU has lacked a central location where these scholars of Korea can discuss their work, collaborate on research projects, and find new research opportunities. For the past 12 years, he has directed a theater troupe, Bunraku Bay Puppet Theater, made up largely of his former MU students. Colleen Heflin, professor in the MU Truman School of Public Affairs, found that SNAP benefits may be beneficial in reducing visits to the emergency room, saving money for families, health care facilities and taxpayers.

Chamberlain used newly developed mineral-dating techniques he created to determine the age of volcanism on Mars at million years ago, as well as the timing of a large-impact event 22 million years ago that launched rocks off the surface of Mars. A University of Wyoming research professor has helped solve the question of how old Mars meteorites are and when volcanism actually occurred on the red planet.
The rocks eventually fell to Earth as meteorites. The dating technique required the use of a specialized instrument called a secondary ionization mass spectrometer or SIMS, of which only three exist in North America, Chamberlain says. The instrument analyzes a mineral sample by excavating microscopic pits about 1 micron deep by 20 microns in diameter in the rock sample and analyzing the isotopic compositions of the excavated material.
For scale, the diameter of a human hair is roughly microns, Chamberlain says. All 18 were found within a millimeter square roughly three-fourths of an inch region of a polished surface of the meteorite. Both minerals are major reservoirs for uranium in meteorites. The large crystals are each less than 15 microns in length, too small to separate physically from the rock. The new dating technique locates the grains using electron beam imaging instruments, and then analyzes them in-situ without needing to break the rock apart.

You’re more than welcome to follow me, but I can assure you that I will not post beautiful pictures of my sims and houses, as I sort of suck at making them. I will mostly reblog things that I like from other simblrs and blog creations from other sites. I am not a creator, nor am I a genius who can tell you how to fix your game. I’m just a lady who loves her sims and needs a place to keep it all.
Professor Cox is well known for making challenging ideas accessible to all, whether you are an avid science reader or a total novice. Using state of the art graphics and imagery from ground-based telescopes and space probes, presented using ultra-high-resolution LED screen technology, Professor Cox will explore the latest missions to the planets, the nature of space and time from the Big Bang to black holes and the origin and fate of life and intelligence in the Universe.
He will also address questions about the value of science, how we acquire scientific knowledge and why we should trust it. Professor Brian Cox said: As a broadcaster, he has presented a number of highly acclaimed science programmes for the BBC, boosting the popularity of subjects such as astronomy and physics and garnering a host of accolades, including two Royal Television Society awards and a Peabody Award for Wonders Of The Solar System.
He has also authored a series of best-selling books, including the widely acclaimed Human Universe and the recently released Universal: A Guide to the Cosmos, and is recognised as the foremost communicator for all things scientific. He holds two Guinness World Record titles for a science tour for his total sell-out debut tour, which began in and saw more than , people attend in total, including a sell-out show at Wembley Arena.

William Schopf and Anatoliy B. Kudryavtsev from UCLA’s Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences and colleagues from the University of Wisconsin analyzed the microorganisms with cutting-edge technology called secondary ion mass spectroscopy. A new analysis of the oldest known fossil microorganisms provides strong evidence to support an increasingly widespread understanding that life in the universe is common.
The microorganisms, from Western Australia, are 3. Scientists from UCLA and the University of Wisconsin—Madison report today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that two of the species they studied appear to have performed a primitive form of photosynthesis, another apparently produced methane gas, and two others appear to have consumed methane and used it to build their cell walls. The study is the most detailed ever conducted on microorganisms preserved in such ancient fossils.
Researchers led by Schopf first described the fossils in the journal Science in , and then substantiated their biological origin in the journal Nature in But the new study is the first to establish what kind of biological microbial organisms they are, and how advanced or primitive they are. For the new research, Schopf and his colleagues analyzed the microorganisms with cutting-edge technology called secondary ion mass spectroscopy, or SIMS, which reveals the ratio of carbon to carbon isotopes — information scientists can use to determine how the microorganisms lived.

The goal of , Strong in the Americas is to ensure that learners throughout the Western Hemisphere are prepared with cross-cultural skills necessary in the 21st century economy and to develop a generation of leaders who can engage across borders. Binational Graduate Student Collaboration for Educational Improvement in Chile project will create and fund learning and research abroad opportunities for Texas State University doctoral students in the field of education.
It will engage doctoral students in cultural immersion and international fieldwork, and advance their skills in international educational research. Specifically, Project LEARN-Chile will design and implement a seminar course for doctoral students to conduct field research in Santiago de Chile in education and the social sciences. Delivered in partnership with Universidad Alberto Hurtado, the Jesuit University of Chile, the project will utilize a service-learning paradigm to facilitate student learning from Chilean colleagues and five community-based educational organizations while also generating research and partnerships that benefit Chilean educational systems.

Share When he raised a grievance to the university, the claim was swiftly rejected. Dr Levy said that when he tried to appeal this decision, he was told he could not because the appeal procedure only applied to the university’s staff and students. As he was a junior research fellow and had been a Royal Society and Newton International fellow at the time, he said he had been treated as a staff member in every respect in the past and had not signed a contract which stated differently.
Speaking on behalf of the Department of Physics, Malcolm Bradbury pictured said the university had never issued Dr Levy with any contract of employment He said: This is simply untrue. Professor Norreys also approved my expenses and travel plan. The tribunal heard while Oxford University functioned as a host for Dr Levy’s research project on laser physics, it was funded by the Royal Society, an independent scientific academy operating on a number of university institutions.
Oxford University also receives a contribution from the Society to host the fellowship. Speaking on behalf of the Department of Physics at Oxford University, Malcolm Bradbury said the university had never issued Dr Levy with any contract of employment and that this was not stipulated in the fellowship contract. Rather, the role of the university to provide Dr Levy with the necessary departmental and institutional support to complete his Fellowship successfully, including adequate office and laboratory space and access to essential equipment and facilities.
