Harvard researchers, reporting in the BMJ in , found that those who followed the diet most closely had longer telomeres, which cap the end of each strand of DNA and protect chromosomes from damage.

Advanced Search Abstract The crust of the Great Basin has occupied a range of tectonic settings through geologic time. Archean and Paleoproterozoic crustal genesis preceded residence of Laurentia within the Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Rodinia, which rifted in the late Neoproterozoic to delineate the Cordilleran flank of Laurentia.

Potential metallogenic influences on Great Basin tectonic evolution included transfer of substance from mantle to crust by magmatism and associated metasomatism, and reworking of crustal materials by both magmatism and intracrustal fluid flow, the latter of which was induced both by thermal effects of magmatism and by reconfiguration of fluid-bearing rock masses during multiple episodes of Great Basin deformation. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of Great Basin geotectonics through geologic time as background for discussions of Great Basin metallogeny in subsequent papers of this special issue.

But first some basic facts about its structure and workings From the beginning, the emphasis was on openness: Winter Catalog, page 2 [Link 9] As it grew and matured, its structure was formalized, but the participatory democracy model remained paramount. Fall Catalog, pages 3, [Link 10] The Special Projects section of that Catalog goes on to flesh out many of those activities and their relation to what was happening in the community at large. By Fall , a year after it had begun, enrollment was ; a year later it had risen to over , where it remained until when the MFU, as we knew it, changed in character—more about that later.

Return to Index How much did it cost? There was, however, a longstanding controversy over whether instructors could charge additional fees for specific classes—more about that later. Return to Index What was taught? The number of courses each quarter during and , ranged from about to , with a median of Any breakdown of courses by content is necessarily rough and arbitrary, but, surprisingly, the percentages remained fairly constant throughout: Given the MFU’s criticism of the existing educational system, it is hardly surprising that instructors would teach what Stanford did not.

Given its belief that personal and interpersonal transformation were essential to political transformation, it is not surprising that there would be a significant number of encounter and personal growth courses. Nor, given the tedious gravity of existing education, is it surprising the MFU would make room for leisure and just plain fun.

For a playful look at the contrast, see Fall Catalog, inside front cover [Link 12] In general, see Summer Catalog [Link 13] and note the classes for High School students Or, to take a specific example, the Poetry Encounter Workshop:

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase I really enjoyed this book. The little stories Justin Halpern tells to outline his terrible history with women are entertaining and sometimes fall on the floor hilarious. I love the straight forward and yet, confusing answers his father provided him as he grew up dealing with girls. The only thing I wished would have been in this book was the quotes at the end of each chapter.

In his first book after every chapter there were four or five quotes from his Dad relating to what the chapter was about. I looked forward to these because they were some of the funniest parts of the book. Still, even with those missing this was a really fun read. Do keep in mind that this is written from a man’s perspective. This means that some of the jokes might be childish and crude.

You could say the same about any author with a book deal in these competitive times. But if fortune favors the prepared mind, then my mind — and manuscript — were fully ready for the luck to happen. About a decade ago, our family moved from Seattle to California. Instead of baking on the beach, I went to the nicely air-conditioned library every day and wrote in longhand on a pad, kinda-sorta writing a Bernard Cornwell-esque historical adventure, but really just figuring out if I liked the hard work of putting sentences together.

Turns out I did.

We were on a mission: I wanted an editorial career just as badly as I wanted to become a New Yorker, so I sought advice from the internship director and food editor at the weekly alternative newspaper I interned at my senior year, who was also a decade-long former New Yorker. Ten weeks before the move, while I was in the city hunting for an apartment, I entered Strand for the first time to apply for a job.

The application was simple enough. Then, I noticed a note that passing the attached literary test was required. I did not pass. Jackson spoke to me about the importance of a knowledgeable staff and how the Strand competes in a changing digital retail landscape.
